When it comes to premium summer tyres, the Kumho Ecsta PS71 and Dunlop SP Sport MAXX RT2 are two models that frequently come up in discussions. Both have performed admirably in a number of tests organised by independent tyre testing bodies such as Autobild and ADAC.
The Kumho Ecsta PS71 tyre, manufactured byKumho, garnered a rating of 77% from our testing team. In the Autobild test involving 53 tyres, it secured a respectable 18th position. Intriguingly, the tyre excelled in the ADAC test, securing third place out of 17 tyres. This model shines especially in aquaplaning scenarios, both cross and longitudinal. Testers noted its high performance capacity, good handling abilities, and short braking distances on both wet and dry surfaces. However, it did receive negative remarks for its elevated noise levels.
On the other hand, theDunlop SP Sport MAXX RT2, known for its ultra high performance (UUHP) and manufactured by Dunlop, has an overall rating of 79%. It surpassed the PS71 in the Autobild test, taking the 11th spot. Nevertheless, it fell behind the Ecsta PS71 in the ADAC test, ranking sixth. In particular, the tyre’s secure wet driving characteristics and short dry braking distances were praised. However, testers pointed out its delayed steering response on dry tracks.
When summarising the data from all tests, given its better average position in the tests, the Dunlop SP Sport MAXX RT2 would be the better choice overall. Still, the Kumho Ecsta PS71 should not be overlooked as its performance on wet surfaces and relative value for money make it a strong contender. At the end of the day, the best tyre for you will depend on your driving conditions and personal preferences.
