Autozeitung published its summer tyre test for 2024 – safety stays top priority

Autozeitung has published its 2024 summer tire test, conducted on a BMW 1 Series with the popular size of 225/45 R17. Unlike other testers, Autozeitung prioritizes driving performance over longevity and ecology, providing a nice contrast to this year’s tests.

However, Continental’s top spot is in line with the results of other tests, as the PremiumContact 7 combines excellent driving performance, above-average durability, and low fuel consumption. The test priorities are clearly illustrated by Michelin Primacy 4+‘s result – it came second in the ADAC test, won the Autobild test, but had to settle for seventh place here due to different priorities. Although Michelin has the longest mileage and the lowest rolling resistance, which directly influences fuel consumption, in this test, these factors weigh less than 10% of the overall grade. Ironically, the “recommended for fuel saving” award went to the tire in the last ninth place, the Bridgestone Turanza 6, which matched Michelin in rolling resistance but performed slightly better on wet surfaces. However, this award isn’t fully justified in the test, as the data suggests Michelin would also deserve it.

Continental PremiumContact 7, the winner of this test

Back to the results – two other tires received a “highly recommended” rating besides the winner: the Pirelli Cinturato P7 C2, which matched Continental in dry conditions and was a close second in the wet, offering a very sporty character compared to its competitors. The second “highly recommended” rating went to the fifth-place Firestone Roadhawk 2, thanks to its low price and good wet performance.

Even higher, in third place, was the even more affordable Hankook Ventus S1 Evo3, which received a “recommended for excellent value” rating. It’s closely behind Pirelli in wet conditions and performs very well on dry surfaces, only missing a better rolling resistance for a higher placement.

Worth mentioning is the eighth place for the test’s cheapest tire, the Maxxis Premitra HP5, which performed average in all categories and, considering its price and other test results, can be recommended for undemanding drivers as can be seen when comparing prices on our website.
