The Falken Azenis FK520 and Michelin Pilot Sport 5 are both impressive UUHP summer tyres manufactured by reputable companies, Falken and Michelin respectively. However, analysing and comparing their performances in various tests, some important differences are highlighted.
The successor to the Falken Azenis FK510, the FK520 is a quality tyre made in Turkey with a solid rating of 82%. Specific test results have shown that its strongest features are longitudinal aquaplaning and exterior noise. In spite of these good overall features, it had a slightly lower ranking in mutual tests, securing it the 9th position out of 10 in the ACE test and 8th out of 50 in the Autobild test. The FK520 showed impressive driving performance on dry tracks with short wet and dry braking distances as per 'autozeitung 2023' test, but struggled with limited lateral guidance in wet conditions.
On the other hand, the Michelin Pilot Sport 5, which succeeded the renowned Pilot Sport 3 and 4 models, boasts an impressive 99% rating. Its main strengths in the tests included aquaplaning (both cross and longitudinal), wet braking, and wet circle cornering, where it particularly excelled. It secured 3rd place in the ACE test and 6th place among 50 competitors in the Autobild test. The Autozeitung test also praised this tyre for its precise handling and driving dynamics, as well as its short wet and dry braking distances. However, it was also noted for its higher price.
In conclusion, while both tyres perform well overall, the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 stands out for its exceptional wet performance and precision handling, earning it a higher testing score. However, the Falken Azenis FK520 still offers reliable performance, particularly in dry conditions, and might appeal to people looking for a more budget-friendly option. This synopsis highlights the need for potential consumers to make decisions based upon specific needs and conditions, as each tyre offers different strengths.
