How we rank

This ranking measures the overall economy of summer tyres by combining multiple key performance factors that influence long-term cost and efficiency. The scores are calculated based on five main criteria: mileage, wear, fuel efficiency, price/value ratio, and rolling resistance. Mileage and wear each carry a 20% weight, reflecting their importance in tyre longevity. Rolling resistance, which measures how much energy the tyre wastes while rolling, has the highest weight at 40%, emphasizing its critical role in fuel savings. Fuel efficiency and price/value ratio each contribute 10% to the final score. All scores are derived from comprehensive independent tests conducted by reputable organizations such as Autobild, ADAC, and Autozeitung, ensuring unbiased and reliable results. The final ranking score aggregates these weighted criteria to highlight tyres that offer the best balance of durability, cost-effectiveness, and energy efficiency.

Key insights

The results reveal a strong dominance by premium segment tyres, with eight of the top ten spots occupied by well-known brands like Michelin, Goodyear, Bridgestone, and Continental. The Michelin Primacy 4 leads the field with an impressive score of 90.4, excelling particularly in mileage (92.5) and rolling resistance (88.4), which drives its top ranking. Goodyear's Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 impresses with perfect mileage (100) and a high price/value ratio (93.7), despite a slightly lower rolling resistance score (77.3). Bridgestone's Turanza 6 and Turanza T005 also showcase strong rolling resistance scores above 90, emphasizing their fuel-saving capabilities. Notably, budget tyres like the Sava Intensa UHP 2 and Fulda SportControl 2 appear lower in the ranking but demonstrate competitive price/value ratios and decent fuel efficiency, proving that economical performance is not exclusive to premium brands. The field is moderately spread out, with a clear gap between the top-ranked Michelin Primacy 4 and lower-ranked low-cost options, reflecting the premium tyres’ superior balance of longevity and efficiency.

Buying advice

If fuel savings and long tyre life are your priorities, focusing on rolling resistance and mileage scores is essential, as these have the greatest impact on overall economy. Tyres like Michelin Primacy 4 and Bridgestone Turanza 6 offer excellent durability and low energy loss, ideal for drivers covering high annual mileage. However, be mindful that tyres optimized for low rolling resistance may sometimes trade off slightly on grip or comfort, so consider your driving conditions. Price/value ratio is also important to ensure you get good performance for your investment, especially if budget constraints matter. This ranking is most relevant for drivers seeking to minimize running costs over time, such as commuters and those doing frequent long-distance driving, who want to balance upfront cost with fuel savings and tyre lifespan.
