How we rank

This ranking focuses on identifying the most economical winter tyres by evaluating key factors that affect cost-efficiency and sustainability over time. The scores are derived from independent tests conducted by reputable organizations such as ADAC, TÜV, AutoBild, and AutoExpress. The main properties assessed include mileage, which reflects the tyre's lifespan; wear, indicating how well the tyre maintains its tread; fuel efficiency, measuring how the tyre contributes to lower fuel consumption; price/value ratio, balancing cost against performance; and rolling resistance, which shows how much energy the tyre wastes while rolling and directly impacts fuel consumption. Among these, rolling resistance carries the greatest weight at 40 points, emphasizing its importance for fuel savings, followed by mileage and wear, each weighted at 20 points. Fuel efficiency and price/value ratio contribute 10 points each, rounding out a comprehensive evaluation that prioritizes durability and energy savings to help drivers reduce overall running costs.

Key insights

The results reveal a competitive field dominated largely by premium and upper-middle segment tyres, with seven of the top ten models coming from premium brands. Nokian's WR D4 leads the ranking with an impressive balance of low rolling resistance (99.3) and strong fuel efficiency (85.5), proving that upper-middle segment tyres can outperform some premium offerings in economical performance. Continental's WinterContact TS 870 follows closely, excelling in mileage (90.3) and known for its exceptional traction and longevity. Nokian’s WR Snowproof also secures a strong position, highlighting Nokian’s consistent focus on stable winter handling paired with economical benefits. Notably, Michelin’s Alpin 6 and Goodyear’s UltraGrip Performance+ round out the top five, showcasing that premium tyres deliver long-lasting performance but sometimes at a slightly higher price/value ratio. The field is relatively tight at the top, with scores ranging from 88.8 to 81.5 among the top five, indicating that several tyres offer a well-rounded combination of economy and winter capability. It is also interesting that some tyres with lower price/value scores still rank highly due to their outstanding rolling resistance and mileage, underscoring the trade-offs between upfront cost and long-term savings.

Buying advice

For drivers prioritizing economical winter tyres, focusing on rolling resistance and mileage should be paramount, as these factors most directly reduce fuel costs and extend tyre life. However, buyers should be mindful of potential trade-offs, such as tyres that excel in fuel efficiency but may have a slightly higher price or less aggressive winter grip. For example, Nokian WR D4 offers an excellent balance for those wanting both economy and reliable winter performance, while Continental’s WinterContact TS 870 suits drivers who value longevity and superior traction despite a higher price point. This ranking is especially relevant for commuters and long-distance drivers who rack up high mileage in winter conditions and want to minimize running costs without compromising safety. Budget-conscious buyers should consider that the most economical choice isn’t always the cheapest upfront but the tyre that delivers consistent performance and fuel savings over time. Ultimately, selecting a tyre that matches your driving habits and winter conditions will ensure the best value and safety throughout the season.
