Sava's origins date back to 1921, when the company was founded under the name Vulkan. In that year, it was established in the Slovenian town of Kranj, initially as a rubber products factory, later focusing mainly on the production of tyres. In 1931, the company was acquired by Semperit, an Austrian company also involved in tyre production. Eight years later, however, the company changed hands again and became part of Continental. In 1946, the company first appeared under the name SAVA and started mass production of car tyres. In 1956, Sava introduced the first tubeless and high-speed tyre. Another important date for the company is 1967, when a licensing agreement is concluded with Semperit. In 2004, the company was fully acquired by Goodyear.
