The Primacy 4+ was already due for an upgrade as it lacked quite a lot in the wet compared to the newer competitors. So this year, we got the Primacy 5, the new model that promised better wet performance as well as impressive 18% longer lifespan compared to the previous model, which was already really good.Unfortunately, the tire was “too new” for this year’s tire tests, so there’s just one test test from a swedish magazine Aftonbladet, which didn’t test wear at all, but the Michelin still managed to come up first and beating the competition, finishing first in all wet disciplines except for handling. The testers said that “Michelin’s new tire is excellent on wet roads. It is always quiet, easy to drive with very good grip in curves, has short braking distances and does not aquaplane at all.”. We can only assume that if wear was also tested, the results would be the same as it’s always Michelin’s strong suit. The Primacy 5 is targeted for comfortable and efficient ride, so if that is what you are looking for, the Primacy 5 is the right candidate.

Continental UltraContact NXT – new sustainable tire surprised in the tests

Next up let’s have a look at something even a bit more ecological – the new Continental UltraContact NXT. It was actually launched last year and it promised using 32% renewable materials, 5% recycled and 28% mass balance certified. As it is still first tire of this kind from a premium manufacturer, we were quite careful with any verdicts as we had no idea if it would be comparable to “regular” tyres. And now when we have first two tests, we are quite impressed – the Continental managed to win both of them. In both of these tests, not only sustainable tires were featured, but also tires like the Bridgestone Turanza 6 or the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2. We honestly didn’t expect that and it seems like featuring more recycled materials in tires is definitely possible which is another piece to the puzzle on the road to sustainable mobility.

Hankook Ventus Evo – the south-korean has caught up

Next we are going to have a look at some less premium options – or at least that is how we spoke in the last years about Hankook, but I am not sure we can say that anymore as the new the Hankook Ventus Evo pretty much beaten all of the premium options in terms of wet braking and dry handling. It finished fifth in the recent Autobild test, but is very strong in wet where it got best wet braking and wet cornering, but also the best dry handling and also the best rolling resistance, which is a great combo for sporty EVs. It’s also got above-average mileage and overall is a great allrounder.

Kumho Ecsta Sport – winner with a nice pricetag

Second non-premium candidate is the new Kumho Ecsta Sport. Now we only got one test from the new Die Reifentester organization, but it got shared first place along with the Bridgestone Potenza Sport and Continental SportContact 7, which is a great result given that these tyres are on top of our all-time summer tire rankings.

Pirelli Cinturato C3 – newer means better?

Another interesting first-tested tire is the Pirelli Cinturato C3, which was tested by tyrereviews.com. It happened with the Kumho, with the Pirelli and also with the UltraContact NXT. And now once more, we finally got a regular test of the EV-specific Hankook ION Evo, which is by the way the OEM tire on the facelifted Tesla Model 3 and the Autobild test this year just confirmed why Tesla chose it.Not only it got great rolling resistance, but it won most of the dry and wet disciplines in the test, challenging the Continental PremiumContact 7 greatly. We used to say that low rolling resistance usually makes the manufacturers make compromise, but the Hankook somehow managed to put it all together. It’s a shame we only got one test of the Hankook as we would like to see more comparisons. We hope to see those next year.

Proven models

Okay, but what if none of the new tyres really impressed you?
