Michelin’s New CrossClimate 3 and 3 Sport – the allseason tyres are now mainstream in Europe

1) A Decade-Long Boom in All-Season Demand

When Michelin first introduced the Crossclimate back in 2015, situation on the market was very different from what it is now – the allseason tyres had a bad name in Europe, usually for a good reason. But Michelin was able to fix the credibility of the allseason tyres with a brand new concept and clever engineering and the other brands followed. If you need a single chart to grasp how radically European motorists have changed their buying habits, look at the growth curve for all-season passenger-car tires:

Year2010201420202024*
Volume (million tires)682849

*2024 = full-year estimate in Michelin/ETRMA datasets.

  • +512 % in ten years – from 8 million units in 2014 to 49 million in 2024.
  • ~20 % compound annual growth 2014-24 – an expansion unmatched by any other replacement-tire category.
  • Source of the gains – 75 % cannibalised from traditional summer products, 25 % from winter tires.

Put differently, every fifth replacement tire sold in Europe this year will be an all-season model—an option that barely existed a decade ago.

2. Bigger Wheels, Pricier Cars, Tougher Specs

Market mix is shifting up-market just as fast:

  • Tires 18 inches and larger jumped from 3 % of all-season sales in 2016 to 18 % in 2024—a twenty-fold rise, fuelled by SUVs, EVs and performance cars. This made Michelin come up with a brand new product for these vehicles, as we will expain later.
  • Four countries—France, Germany, Italy and the Benelux region—account for 73 % of total European demand, but growth is now visible everywhere legislation tightens.

3. Why Regulations Matter (and What 3PMSF Really Means)

  • Since France’s 2021 “Loi Montagne II,” winter or all-season tires carrying the 3-Peak-Mountain-Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol are mandatory in 48 départements from 1 Nov-31 Mar.
  • M+S-only markings no longer count as legal winter equipment in those zones (chains or socks are the fallback).
  • Similar “fit-if-conditions-require” or sign-posted mandates cover large parts of Central & Northern Europe, while full seasonal mandates run from Finland to Slovenia.

Result: a regulatory environment that strongly encourages a one-tire-fits-all solution—so long as it wears the 3PMSF badge and performs like a winter tire when the mercury drops.

  • Purple: Countries where winter tires are mandatory from mid-November to the end of March.
  • Ochre / yellow-brown: Countries where winter tires are mandatory only when weather conditions require them.
  • Blue: Countries where winter tires are mandatory only when indicated by specific road signs.
  • Green: Countries where winter tires are not mandatory.

4. Enter Michelin’s Third-Generation CrossClimate Family

Michelin pioneered the segment in 2015, and it’s doubling down again with two new products, one of them being the brand new Crossclimate 3 sport:

4.1 CrossClimate 3 Sport – first true  all-season performance tire

  • Dynamic Response hybrid aramid/nylon belt for steering precision.
  • Thermal Adaptive Compound 2.0 keeps grip consistent across –10 °C to +40 °C.
  • Every size earns the top EU wet-grip “A” label and 3PMSF snow certification—rare in one tire, unheard-of in the UHP segment.

4.2 CrossClimate 3 – the mainstream upgrade

  • +4 % wet grip, +15 % mileage versus CrossClimate 2.
  • Maintains low rolling resistance—a key range-extender for EVs.
  • Manufactured in Europe, with complex 18-inch+ SKUs produced via Michelin’s high-precision C3M additive-manufacturing process in Roanne, France.

5. What It Means for Fleets, EV Owners and Everyday Drivers

  1. One set of tires, zero seasonal changeovers.  Swapping twice a year costs €60-€100 per visit and ties up storage space.
  2. Regulation-proof: 3PMSF compliance keeps you road-legal from Alpine passes to Scandinavian highways.
  3. Performance without trade-offs: CrossClimate 3 Sport matches—or beats—dedicated summer UHP rubber on dry stopping distance while outranking it for snow traction and efficiency.
  4. EV ready: Low rolling resistance classes (A–B) can add 20–40 km of extra range on a WLTP cycle.

6. Key Takeaways

  • The European all-season market grew 6× in unit terms and 10× in value over the past decade.
  • Regulatory pressure (3PMSF-only rules) and user convenience are accelerating adoption.
  • Michelin’s CrossClimate 3 Sport carves out a brand-new “all-season UHP” niche, while CrossClimate 3 raises the bar for mainstream buyers.
  • For fleets, EV drivers and performance-car enthusiasts alike, the 2025 all-season class delivers genuine year-round safety—and now, genuine excitement behind the wheel.
